Consumers Energy Joins Trees Initiative Supporting Partners

Consumers Energy is the first Supporting Partner of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Trees Initiative. The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers (GSGP) are leading the Trees Initiative – a new regional effort with the goal of planting 250 million trees by 2033.

GSGP is working with the region’s eight US States and two Canadian Provinces, federal governments, corporations, cities and other institutions to plant 250 million trees in the region over the next ten years. Tree planting creates many benefits including carbon storage, water quality improvements, habitat and biodiversity, recreational access, and improved health outcomes.

Supporting Partners help to ensure that trees thrive and deliver benefits for years to come. Supporting Partners include corporations, NGOs, universities and schools, civic organizations and other entities that support the Trees Initiative and local tree planting projects that deliver real impacts in local communities.

“We are grateful for the support of Consumers Energy,” David Naftzger, executive director of GSGP, said. “As our region’s companies work to reduce their environmental footprint, the Trees Initiative aims to create many new benefits for people and planet.”

“Consumers Energy is committed to focusing on the triple bottom line of people, planet and prosperity in all that we do within the state of Michigan,” said Linda Hilbert, executive director of environmental quality and sustainability for Consumers Energy. “As one of the largest landowners in the state, we know how important it is to be good stewards of that land, and so we’ve set a goal to enhance, restore or protect 6,500 acres of land over the next 5 years. One of the best ways to do that is by planting trees, and we’re grateful to Great Lakes St Lawrence Trees Initiative for the opportunity to join this partnership.”
